Christmas in the Peace Corps

Christmas was almost two months ago, but it’s never too late to talk about new experiences! I spent the holidays with a fellow PCV, and her host mother taught us how to make rice tamales.

Below are photos and descriptions of the experience!

First we cleaned the banana leaves. Some are also cut into smaller pieces and smoked so that they don’t break when being folded into tamales.
Pork for the tamales!
Raw leaf on bottom, smoked leaf on top, two spoonfuls-ish of rice, one chunk of pork.
Ready to fold! I love the colors and texture of this pic.

Super excited about my new tamale folding skills!
Around 100 tamales ready for the fire!
This pot was covered, and the tamales cooked for 3 hours.
Breakfast the next morning with a little ketchup
